Never in a million years would I have ever predicted I would be writing a blog such as this. But in these confusing times, sometimes questions is all we have! So let's dive into a few most commonly asked questions by dog owners during this crisis.

Can my dog get COVID-19?

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, there has been no reports of pets or other animals becoming sick with coronavirus in Australia. As well as no evidence that Australian pets or animals might be a source of infection with the virus.

However, Elwood Vet, which just so happens to be one of our favourite local vets. Recently released a blog stating that cats and dogs can be infected with various sorts of their own coronaviruses. Although they mentioned that generally viruses, like COVID-19, don't normally transmit between different species.

Can I still walk my dog outside?

If you are not ill with COVID-19, or are not completing a recommended 14 day quarantine, then yes you can definitely still walk your dog outside. It's important to maintain a healthy exercise regime for your pooch, even in these times of suggested self isolation.

What are some ways to social distance myself while walking my dog?

Social distancing in public is extremely crucial to reduce the risk of transmission of coronavirus. There are a few things you can do, as stated by the Department of Health and Human Services, to make sure you are social distancing when out in public. 

  • Keeping an entire arm span (or roughly 1.5 metres) between yourself and other people
  • Avoid crowded areas, where it may be difficult to distance yourself and your dog from others
